Ntcheu Dzonzi Vai MP Dyless Mbengo Flees Residence over K150 million unpaid produce

…sitichoka mpaka alipile

Member of Parliament for Ntcheu Dzonzi Vai, Dyless Mbengo, is reported to have fled her residence in Lilongwe’s Area 49 after a group of traders she allegedly owes money gathered at her home, demanding payment or the return of their goods.

According to the traders, some of the produce in question was supplied as far back as last year. Despite this, they claim the MP has yet to settle the outstanding payments. Mbengo has reportedly informed police that she is currently in her constituency, though traders at the scene dispute this and say they are prepared to remain at her residence until the matter is resolved.

In an audio recording obtained by The Investigators from a confrontation with Police at the property on Sunday morning, one trader expressed frustration:

“During Parliament, she said she was busy with parliamentary duties. After Parliament, she has now left without resolving this issue. It is this kind of dishonesty that has forced us to wait for her here. I came all the way from Ntchisi, why can’t she come from her constituency and settle this matter once and for all?”

However, independent investigations suggest Mbengo may not be in her constituency. Sources indicate she was seen travelling towards Lilongwe on Saturday and was reportedly dropped off at a lodge near Likuni Roundabout, believed to be called Zamkutu. While the exact location has not been fully verified, efforts are underway to track her movements.

Police later in the afternoon left the premises and Traders insisted on having her vehicles at Lingadzi Police. Our informers indicate she left Zamkutu lodge around midday and she boarded a minibus heading towards Ntcheu to run away from the traders

Meanwhile, police have deployed a Land Cruiser (registration MP 2919) to guard the residence. Two officers, identified as Isaac Mpheya from Area 30 and Ng’ambi from Area 3, are said to be the ones she uses. They are currently attempting to disperse the protesting traders, who remain adamant that their grievances must be addressed.

Another CID team led by a Nyirongo came in the morning. Traders claim one is owed K49 million and another K75 million. The Traders say they are not in for violence as she is lying to Police.

Tensions have also arisen between the protesters and law enforcement, with claims that the matter had previously been reported to the police and escalated to fiscal authorities. Traders have questioned why no decisive action has been taken.

Mbengo’s situation is further complicated by past allegations. She was reportedly arrested in January 2025 on accusations of obtaining goods worth approximately K577 million without payment. Critics now allege that she is benefiting from police protection and exploiting legal processes to avoid accountability.

Additional reports suggest that, following earlier media coverage, Mbengo delivered a consignment of beans to a fellow Member of Parliament, though details surrounding this development remain unclear, after The Investigator published her crooked deals.

This is a developing story, and updates will follow as more information emerges regarding the ongoing vigil at her residence and the broader investigation.
