…opposition parties show up, propelling alliance rumours
Malawians cannot continue with a failed and visionless leader, as demonstrated by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), one of the signatories of Tonse Alliance Enock Chihana has charged apologising to the nation for signing a pact that has brought misery to the people.
Chihana was opening a convention for his Alliance for Democracy (Aford) party in Lilongwe, where he charged that opposition parties, including the DPP, Peoples Party, UDF and UTM, would remove the MCP from power.
“I have heard they have already started packing; they should go; we are tired of such a failed leadership,” charged Chihana, son of multiparty hero Chakufwa, who openly challenged the one-party regime under the then MCP leader Kamuzu Banda.
He said the continued massive government borrowing and high cost of living showed the country was failing to manage its economy, which he attributed to poor leadership. He cited the incident in Chikwawa, where President Lazarus Chakwera’s convoy was stoned, as a sign that things were not going in the right direction.
“Aford has never been in government, so this K15 trillion debt is from previous regimes. We will stop this,” promised Chihana, whose convention is being held in a carnival atmosphere.
He added, “We need to produce and develop our economy. We can’t continue begging. They tell us what to do because we are beggars.”
DPP Secretary General Peter Mukhito, UTM Patron Newton Kambala and representatives of the Peoples Party and the UDF attended the opening, raising bets that the opposition is likely to unite to oust President Chakwera and his MCP.
