…accused of joining MCP
…Chomanika not expelled
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) says Mwanza Central MP Nicholas Dausi has joined the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) as such he has been expelled from the party.
Images on social media showed Dausi at a rally in Mwanza where MCP officials including Director of Youth Richard Chimwendo and Water Minister Abida Mia were in full party regalia.
However, Dausis associates claimed the rally was for the launch of a stadium initiative under the Ministry of Local Government whose Minister is Chimwendo Banda.
DPP said Dausi was invited earlier on July 24 for a hearing but he snubbed the meeting.
“He has been expelleed for indiscipline and undermining the authority of the NGC of the Party,” said a senior party official who confirmed the expulsion notice issued by party spokesperson Shadrec Namalomba.
The party official said Dausi went on social media with tantrums that he cannot be summoned to a disciplinary hearing, so he never turned up and never gave any excuse or any reasons for his staying away from the hearing.
Asked if Deputy Local Government Minister Owen Chomanika was being spared, the official said, “When he was appointed Deputy minister and requested to be relieved of all his privileges and responsibilities in the DPP.”
Chomanika is seating next to Dausi at the said Mwanza rally.
Another official said Dausi and MCP could not announce his defection as it could end up DPP asking the Speaker to invoke section 65 which bars crossing of the floor.
We are yet to speak to Dausi but his associates claim unelected DPP leaders are trying to curb criticism over their undemocratic tendencies.
“He will get an injunction over this madness,” said a Dausi ally.
We will update the story once we get more details.
