DPP reinstates convict Ngwira

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has reinstated the just released from jail Christopher Mzomera Ngwira as its regional governor for the North.

In a letter to Ngwira by the party’s administrative secretary Francis Mphepo states that the arrest, conviction, and prison sentence of Ngwira did not contravene the party constitution.

“The party took this decision after the review of a High Court judgment and has concluded that the offence which you were convicted for does not disqualify you from holding a party office,” said Mphepo in a letter to Ngwira dated 11 December, 2022.

The colourful Ngwira who also claims to be a religious leader of his own church was convicted and sentenced to four years imprisonment for forging and obtaining K650.000 from the constituency development fund. He later repaid K400,000.

The High Court in May this year reduced the sentence which set Ngwira free but his conviction stands. Ngwira has to wait for seven years from date of his conviction before he can run for an elective offce again.

He was MP for Mzimba Hora.
