Ex-NFRA Deputy CEO convicted

Former National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) deputy Chief Executive Gerlad Viola is facing a jail sentence after the Principal Resident Magistrates Court found him guilty in multiple charges over K3.3 billion maize procurement.

Viola was accused to singlehandedly awarding businessman Chrispin Chingola a tender to supply 10 000 tons of maize worth K3.3 billion. 

Principal Resident Magistrate Viva Nyimba has also revoked bail pending sentencing on 27 February 2023.

Viola who also served as President Peter Mutharikas Press Secretary, Director of Information and personal assistant to late Sidik Mia is a former radio personality who worked at Malawi Broadcasting Corporation.

Since moving into public space, Viola has had several altercations with the law enforcement agencies.

Apart from fraud and forgery, Viola was charged with abuse of office. He is facing two to five years in jail.
