Zuneth Sattar, popularly known as JK among his friends, has had close influence on the Malawi ruling class. Until his arrest by the National Crime Agency (NCA) in the United Kingdom, he literally owned Malawi government’s every department.
The Investigator’s nine months research on Sattar indicate that he paid billions of kwacha to ruling parties namely the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), UTM, Malawi Congress Party (MCP), People’s Party and the United Democratic Front (UDF).
Sattar had total influence on government contracts in the Malawi Police Service, the Malawi Defence Force and the Ministry of Finance. He also ran the Ministry of Lands from his office in Area 4 in Lilongwe.
Government officials suffered “verbal tirades,” including outright insults for undertaking their work related to Sattar’s business, officials from the Ministry of Lands and the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) told us. Sattar has told The Investigator, he never broke the Treasury to steal money and feels “betrayed” by those he sponsored. He has accumulated over 100 properties across the world and owns at least 10 percent of land in city centre Lilongwe.
Apart from cash, his top gifts include vehicles to DPP, MCP, UDF and UTM senior figures. The Anti-Corruption Bureau dossier submitted to President Lazarus Chakwera, which we intend to publish in our January edition, Sattar paid school fees to several officials, including a judge at the Commercial Division of the High Court, gave cement to newspaper editors and TV sets to some public officials.
