A 14 year Mary Mount student identified as Ruth Tembo has been killed in a bus accident that happened at Luviri in Mzimba after a speeding bus lost control.
A 12 year old Vanessa Salima has lost her left arm after it was amputated for severe damage, Police have confirmed.
A Police brief issued on Monday 2 January says the bus was being driven by 52 Dunken Ngwende of Panash Bus and happened at 15:00 hours at Luviri along Jenda/Chikangawa M1 road
The bus had 58 passengers on board all being students from Mary Mount Secondary School – Mzuzu.
“On arrival before Luviri bridge, the driver lost control of his motor vehicle due to too high speed and as a result it swerved to the right then left where it hit the road embarkment and overturned” said Police in statement.
Ruth Tembo was pronounced dead on arrival at Mzimba District Hospital due to severe loss of blood .
Three passengers including Vanessa Salima, Joseph Andrea Phinifolo who sustained a fracture on the left hand, and Thandwe Mmanjamwada sustained severe head injury were categorised as having sustained serious injuries while 18 passengers escaped with different minor injuries.
There has been calls for tougher regulations on passenger vehicles drivers and speeds which continues to kill many passengers.
