APM set to return?

While in the USA former President Donald Trump has announced he will run again in 2024, speculation is growing that former president Peter Mutharika is set to try and reclaim his seat at Kamuzu Palace, splitting the already weak former ruling party.

Mutharika, who has been making frequent press briefings on the shortfalls of the Tonse Alliance administration, is said to have been convinced to run again by current political developments, including the arrest of Vice-President Saulos Chilima which many expect will increase the turmoil in the shaky Tonse administration.

“Initially, he had indicated he will retire by 2023. He met all the aspirants, but since mid-October, things look different. He is convinced he can return to Kamuzu Palace,” said a close aide of Mutharika.

Mutharika spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba confirmed that Mutharika is considering the come back, but described it as “not a good question,” the Investigator had sent to his Whatsapp.

“Malawians are pestering him to stand again looking at how this country has been vandalised and destroyed. He is consulting and praying over it to say yes or no,” said Namalomba.

Mutharika’s potential return will unsettle the younger generation of the party that has already been split into four camps of Leader of Opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa, former Chief Secretary and Minister Bright Msaka, former Minister of Finance Joseph Mwanamvenkha and former Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Governor of the Reserve Bank Dalitso Kabambe.

Two other names, Football Association of Malawi President Walter Nyamilandu and Former Press Corporation CEO George Patridge are being mentioned by the party establishment as potential candidates.
