K12bn public loot by MCP and UTM leads to MAREP 9 collapse

The Malawi Rural Electrification Programme (Phase 9) has collapsed as suppliers dominated by ruling party Malawi Congress Party and its Tonse Alliance partner UTM officials are failing to supply the materials.

Suppliers list which has 90 percent politically linked persons from the MCP and UTM, including active politicians businesses shared K12 bn as one third advance payment mid 2022 but most of suppliers are failing to deliver the goods.

Secretary for Energy Alfonso Chikuni who has not been responding to our questions, told Parlaiment on Wednesday.

Contracts for suppliers will expire on 25 January 2023 and the project roll out was supposed to be from April 2023.

“We cannot issue contracts to contractors as we do not have the materials,” said Chikuni.

Chairperson of the Natural Resources and Climate Change Committee Welani Chilemga did not hide his disdain saying the Ministry seemed “hopeless” as it watched suppliers failing to supply requisite items.

The Investigator Magazine will publish full list of suppliers who have supplied and failed to supply by the end of business January 25,2023.
