Endorsement season. Tonse Alliance key partner UTM says it is unfazed by the pronouncements by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to endorse President Lazarus Chakwera as its torch bearer in the next elections.
Malawi is expected to go to the polls in the next 27 months to elect a new President, Parliament and Local Councils.
Former ruling party DPP has been running endorsements sessions mainly by regional committees who seek the return of its leader Peter Mutharika.
The MCP whose senior members have been declaring Chakweras presidency for 2025, says they have now made the call formal
Party acting publicist Ezekiel Ching’oma confirmed to local media that the party’s national executive had endorsed Reverend Chakwera to run for another term.
UTM whose leader Saulos Chilima became Chakweras runningmate in the 2020 Fresh elections has stated publicly that it expects to become Leader of Tonse Alliance in 2025 as per agreement.
Asked of what the party thinks of the formal endorsement, Party Publicity Secretary Felix Njawala said the development did not affect the UTM.
“That is their internal business” Njawala said. Asked if they will support the MCP by providing another runningmate Njawala responded, “we don’t provide running mates to MCP.”
MCP has intensified its preparations and currently it’s officials are focusing on the Northern and Eastern political regions.
Njawala said his party was focusing on helping to find solutions to challenges Malawians are facing not politics.
“We thought it is time to build Malawi,”he said.
