Who ordered Chizuma’s arrest? Bishops ask

Who is behind the arrest of the Director General of the Anti Corruption Bureau Martha Chizuma, so powerful that he or she can command the countrys security agents behind Malawi leaders, the influential Catholic Bishops have wondered.

The Bishops have weighed in ,on the arrest of Chizuma that saw President Lazarus Chakwera, his Ministers of Justice Titus Mvalo, Informatiom Gospel Kazako and Homeland Security  Jean Sendeza all feign ignorance.

The Investigator has been reliably informed President Lazarus Chakwera and Sendeza were aware before and after the arrest.

“What seriously disturb the whole nation is the lack of knowledge of the State President of the Republic of Malawi about the arrest warrant of this very important public officer,” reads a letter signed by Malawis seven Catholic Bishops.

The statement says it is time President Chakwera and his administration “wake up” and fight corruption which they say is affecting lives of Malawians.

“We cannot but join many  Malawians who in their disbelief are wondering who really in-charge of the affairs of this country?” they are.

The Bishop say while the applaud the Government for giving assuarances that it is in control, the public remain sceptical that the assuarance is cosmetic.

“It baffles us that all this operation involving arrest of a high profile public official in the Government and involving a legitimate organ of the State like the Police was happening without the people that ordinarily would be expected to know (not knowing).

“If this is allowed to happen this way, how secure are we as citizens and as a Nation?” questions the Bishops.

The statement is signed by the ArchBishops George Tambala (Lilongwe) and Thomas Msusa (Blantyre and Bishops Montfort Sitima (Mangochi), Peter Musukwa (Chikwawa) Martin Mtumbuka (Karonga) John Ryan (Mzuzu) and Peter Chifukwa (Dedza). Justice Minister Titus Mvalo announced suspension of Director of Public Prosecutions Steven Kayuni who triggered the arrest by obtaining a warrant of arrest. Meanwhile, Chizuma lawyers have asked Mvalo to furnish evidence of withdraw of charges as he announced in parliament.
