…5 councils cleared.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has recommended that the Karonga District Council should restart its recruitment for the Unified Beneficiery Registry (UBR) exercise as it was fraught with serious irregularities.
The graft-busting body however has cleared Dowa, Ntchisi, Kasungu, Chiradzulu, and Nkhotakota District Councils as there is no evidence of prosecutable corrupt practices in relation to the recruitment.
“Following numerous complaints received and pursuant to its powers under Section 23 (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act, in April 2023, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) restricted complained against District Councils from proceeding with the recruitment and/or training of enumerators for the 2023 Unified Beneficiary Registry (UBR) exercise in the respective Districts Councils,” said ACB’s Egrita Ndala in a statement.
She said the Restriction Notices were issued to allow the Bureau to conduct investigations into the allegations regarding the recruitment of enumerators.
“The Bureau has however, found that there were serious irregularities in Karonga and has therefore maintained the restriction notice it issued against the recruitment and training process and has recommended that the recruitment process should restart,” reads the statement.
